Kenan, the Merck Foundation, and MSD (Thailand) designed the IN-STEP education initiative to improve sci- ence instruction and learning in Thailand. From 2006 to 2010, the program was piloted in the province of Phang-Nga, and from 2010 to 2012 it was scaled-up in additional provinces.

The IN-STEP initiative is spon- sored by MSD Thailand, and funded by MSD Thailand and Merck & Co. Inc. The IN-STEP project was managed by Kenan and built upon the experience of the Merck Institute for Science Education (MISE) in the United States. The initiative included carefully-designed science curriculum modules, professional development for teachers, and support for learning communities within and beyond participating schools. The project’s initiatives were enhanced through scaling-up and replicating activities. 54 schools replicated MSD IN-STEP science camps for over 5,790 students. Additionally, the Institute for the Promotion of Teaching Science and Technology (IPST) used its own funds to expand MSD IN-STEP and leveraged MSD IN-STEP instructor teams to implement the program in ten provinces, where they targeting low-performing schools in seven pilot provinces in a project named Upgrading Teaching and Learning Skills in Mathematics and Science (UPGRADE).
