Citibank / Citi Foundation (2010-2012)
In 2010, Kenan Foundation Asia, Citi, and the Citi Foundation launched the Triple Bottom Line Small Hotels Project. Over the course of three years, the Kenan project team built the capacities of small hotel managers and owners in Bangkok and central Thailand, teaching them to operate more sustainably by utilizing the Triple Bottom Line (People-Planet-Profit) business model, which demonstrates that positive social and environmental business decisions can also be cost positive.
Utilizing the United Nations Environment Programme’s interactive learning methods, 3BL workshops, and one-on-one consulting, Kenan built the capacity of 238 small hotels. As a direct result of the project, 37 of the participating hotels hired 151 new employees, 129 hotels implemented 216 employee-based environmental/community engagements, and 178 hotels implemented 356 initiatives which resulted in strategic operational costs savings.
